We’re really pleased to welcome The Sunrise Sessions – a new video mix series from Oslo based Plastic Fantastic as part of our schedule for the Chill Out Tent Edition #14

Volume One, kicks off the new series with a mix from Plastic Fantastic. Here’s what they’ve got to say about the session;

This mix is very much a hats-off to José Padilla as they’ve included several records that he played at the Café Del Mar in Ibiza back in the good ol’ days. By the way, if you haven’t already watched In Memory Of José Padilla – The Godfather Of Chill on Youtube, I highly recommend seeing that first as this mix is kind of a follow-up to that.

José Padilla was and still is a huge influence on me as a DJ, particularly his late eighties to mid nineties period as resident DJ at the iconic Café Del Mar where he would provide an eclectic, emotive, chilled and yet simultaneously powerful soundtrack to the sunset. Anyone who was lucky enough to be there back in the day will eagerly testify that they experienced something special. José Padilla sadly passed away last year. His musical legacy and pioneering spirit will not be forgotten.

You may recognise some familiar records in this mix, such as Mike Oldfield’s ‘Tubular Bells’ (theme from The Exorcist) and ‘Moments In Love’ by Art of Noise alongside plenty of perhaps lesser known gems. Just to mention a few, Propaganda’s opus ‘La Carne, La Morte E Il Diavolo’, and the rather blissful ‘Island Sunrise’ by Software. The Balearic connoisseurs amongst listeners will enjoy Elkin & Nelson’s sublime latin jam-out ‘Vamonos’, and yes of course I play the record in its entirety (nine glorious minutes!). This record by the way is an absolute Ibiza classic; Alfredo would frequently drop it at Amnesia back in the 80s, truly powerful stuff. Jazz guitar virtuoso Pat Metheny’s ‘Sueno Con Mexico’ closes the mix on a dreamy note, quite literally… Fun fact, Metheny recorded the LP that particular track was taken from right here in Oslo.’

The Chill Out Tent – Jose Padilla Cafe Del Mar Cassette Mixtape #8

Here is the digitised and remastered audio of the cassette sold to one of The Chill Out Tent crew by Jose Padilla at Cafe Del Mar in the early 90s. CintiFest created a film to accompany this audio, first shown in Edition #8 on 29 November 2020 as part of our tribute to Jose, the original sunset maestro.

Cinti says ‘It is such a huge honor to create visuals for a homage to Jose Padilla. He is definitely a Founding Father of our culture. Rest in Power. Jose in the Sky with Ra.”

The original tape was bought by one of our team, who nagged Jose for track id’s until the great man reluctantly handed over his precious notebook of track listings long enough for the classic titles to be scribbled down. The mix is one that we’ve not seen previously online, we hope it provides a fitting tribute to our maestro of the sunset. It’s a seminal Jose collection, the Balearic blue print of ambient, electronics, classical, new-age, film scores and rock in the mix.

Yggdrasil – Dimun [Mike Salta & Mortale remix]

Originally premiered on The Chillout Tent live stream session #5. The official release on digital platforms is 4th Sept 2020 and vinyl 6th Nov 2020

NuNorthern Soul proudly presents Dimun, an overlooked neo-classical / ambient fusion track by Faroe Islands-based producer Kristan Blak’s Yggdrasil project. Label boss ‘Phat’ Phil Cooper was playing G! festival on the Faroe Islands in 2019 and as part of the experience the delegates, artists and DJs where invited to see and experience some of the cultural spots and institutions of the Faroe Islands. One of those was Tutl records owned by Kristian Blak. Tutl records is a wonderful record store and label representing the wealth of amazing Faroese recording talent and has been around for years. tutlrecords.com Kristian invited a few people to his house and he played the piano line of Dimun, Phil recorded it on his phone and could not stop watching it… He eventually contacted Kristian to ask about the music which led to it being licensed for this release.

Our Friends in Bali…

We’re busy putting the finishing touches to out next big event, the Chill Out Tent – ‘Around the World’ stream next week. It’s pretty exciting to see the global journey taking shape and realising the quality of the performances we’ll be sharing and the great international crews we’ll be working with.

We’re really looking forward to linking up with our friends in Bali, that’s Baliaric FM and Adrian Giordano who are hosting a poolside session at the incredibly beautiful Taman Bebek. This will also feature a chilled set from Indonesian DJ Seabass with support from local musician Baba Agus who will improvise with flute and tabla.

Broadcasting from the beautiful and vibe-rich island of Bali, Baliaric.fm is run by music lovers, for music lovers. The station plays 24/7, including playlists, shows, and live-streams from studios, private villas and other stunning locations.

The venue for the session, Taman Bebek is now an iconic boutique hotel perched on the Sayan Ridge in Ubud, Bali. It dates back to the 1930s, when the Canadian ethno-musicologist, Colin McPhee and his anthropologist wife, Jane Belo built a Balinese house and beautiful garden on the edge of the ridge above the magnificent Ayung River valley. During the 1930s this was a playground and source of inspiration to the rich and famous.

In 1980, when Bali lover, landscape artist and writer Made Wijaya acquired the land, only the foundations of these houses remained. He restored it to it’s former glory and it became a favourite hang out of jet setters like David Bowie, Yoko Ono, Mick Jagger and Francis Coppola. We’ll be able to experience it soon too, can’t wait…

Blade Runner Blues – Vangelis

Our next Chill Out Tent classic is the majestic Blade Runner Blues from the Vangelis soundtrack of the 1982 iconic science fiction feature. Eventually released in 1994 after years of legal wrangling it remains a seminal electronic landmark. Arguably best enjoyed in the 2007 special edition triple pack…
