Albums of the month: Dub reggae special edition

Written by:

This month we have a dub/reggae showcase as we celebrate the third release in Om Unit’s Acid Dub Studies and the fourth release by Richard Norris’s Oracle Sound project.

Om Unit and Oracle Sound bring their electronic/dance music sensibilities to dub reggae with Om Unit favouring more of a UK soundsystem style, while Oracle Sound has a slightly more laidback sunshine vibe.

While you can sense the influence of Rhythm & Sound in Richard’s grooves, he brings hints of global Balearica to a sound that exudes warmth, sunshine and joy.

Meanwhile, Manchester’s Nat Birchall brings the nyabinghi drums and a more traditional sound. Imagine coming across a bunch of elders drumming by a waterfall deep in the Jamaican jungle. Proper, proper roots music.

Finally, Zion I Kings hail from the Virgin Islands but have been very much part of the rebirth of Jamaican roots reggae over the past decade. They have produced the likes of Akae Beka/Midnite, Lutan Fyah, Cornell Campbell and Jah9 but their own very modern JA dub sound brings a sun-kissed quality that lovers of Balearic grooves will adore.
