Album of the Year
Midland – Fragments of Us
A queer beauty that both understands and banishes the shame we carry with us and celebrates the communities we’ve become. Queenie and I built a shed together this summer for pottering in and embracing the joys of the queer home we’ve built together over the past 30 years and it’s almost as if this album was waiting to complete it. I sit there, Queenie sits there, and Harry completes the warmth this pile of imported wood called our shed brings us. Tears of recognition and joy, sadness, grief and our shared histories. It’s family in a stunner of a gatefold. Just as we always knew it would be.
Single of the year
Romy – She’s On My Mind
It’s a moment of perfect hyper pop glorious in its queerness. Loved because it just says it as it is, it is at the lesbian love song we’ve wanted to hear since coming out all those decades ago. No nodding wink, no any words but the actual reality, no innuendoes, no secret codes. Just truth. Just as it is. In a pop song. On the radio. On our socials. Just normal. Just every day. Just Romy loving Vic. Just me loving her.
Banger of the year
Bentley – Disco Drama (Hifi Sean Dub)
The label name (Polari Records) says it all, a jubilant slice of almost-Italo disco that insists on the wiggles as disco’s most utterly fabulous of DJs leaps in to the studio and produces the sashay beats we all knew they would. Give me disco. Disco drama.
